This is Thomas MacEntee with Abundant Genealogy and here are the genealogy and family history-related items you need to know for today, Friday, September 21st, 2018:

PeopleLegacy.com Violates Find A Grave Members’ Copyrighted Photos

Recently, I was alerted to a new site called People Legacy (https://www.peoplelegacy.com) by many members of the genealogy community. The reason: it appears that People Legacy has used copyrighted photos uploaded to Find A Grave by members of the popular cemetery record and grave memorial website.

Most of the Find A Grave members with whom I’ve had online conversations are outraged not just at the misappropriation of the content they supplied, but many feel violated at how People Legacy has plastered their watermark over most photos, including the faces of beloved ancestors.

So I checked memorials on Find A Grave for my own ancestors, including my grandmother Anna Austin, and the image of her gravestone was littered with the peoplelegacy.com watermark.

So what should you do if your copyrighted photos or the memorials at Find A Grave for your ancestors are affected? Go to Abundant Genealogy and read my in-depth investigation on who is behind People Legacy and what you can do to stop their blatant theft of content. In a nutshell: Ancestry.com, the owner of Find A Grave, is very aware of the situation and pursuing various “take down” strategies against People Legacy. For now, it is recommended that you NOT send emails to Ancestry or People Legacy or post messages at the Ancestry Facebook Page since doing so diverts customer service resources when the issue is already being worked on.
