Black Friday Sales on DNA, Genealogy and Family History in Full Swing

So how was your Thanksgiving holiday? Well, I hope it was peaceful, enjoyable and you were lucky enough to be surrounded by family. I also hope you had a great meal! As for me, I spent most of the day (and most of the evening) researching Black Friday sales. As I had predicted a few weeks ago, 2018 is turning out to once again be the year of DNA and DNA test kits!

I am absolutely amazed at some of the news that came out early this morning. I was up at 1:00 a.m. waiting for some of the DNA vendors to announce their plans for Black Friday. And let me tell you, I wasn’t disappointed. Leading the way is Family Tree DNA which has broken the low price barrier on DNA test kit pricing. Earlier today they announced that their Family Finder test—an autosomal test similar to AncestryDNA—is available for just $39! This remarkable sale runs through Monday, November 26th.

In addition, other big news is that the 23andMe DNA test kit that includes testing for health issues is 50% OFF today only at Amazon. This test kit normally sells for $199, but now it’s available for $99.99 with Free Shipping! Visit either or to get the latest information on Black Friday deals for DNA test kits as well as other genealogy and family history products and services.

DNA Buyer Beware: What to Look for When Buying a DNA Test this Black Friday

In addition to all the work I put in scouring the Internet for some of the best deals and promo codes for Black Friday, I also spent much of the morning composing a long article to help people determine what type of DNA test is right for them. Determining which DNA test kit or company is the right one is a little bit more complicated than you might think. Most consumers in the US end up buying an autosomal DNA test which is the one that AncestryDNA plugs on television and in radio ads. Given that a large majority of those who test their DNA are only interested in the ethnicity breakdown, many choose not to pursue family history research. However, there is a core group of DNA test users interested in genealogy. These potential testers need to know some basics as to which test and which testing companies are the best for research purposes.

In short, both Ancestry and 23andMe won’t allow users to upload DNA test results from other companies to their websites. This means if you want to take advantage of possibly matching with any of the 10 million users at AncestryDNA, you really need to buy AncestryDNA’s test kit which is selling right now for $49. The same goes for 23andMe: if you want to match with any of their users, you must use the 23andMe test kit. Now when it comes to the other three DNA vendors, while they allow you to upload data from another company to their website, some companies, like Family Tree DNA, use a “freemium” model when it comes to data uploads. This means you can upload your data for free and get some basic services to use at the Family Tree DNA site. But you’ll have to pay $19 in order to take full advantage of all the features at Family Tree DNA. And over at MyHeritage right now, uploading your DNA test results from another company is totally free; however, that policy will change as of December 1st when a charge will be instituted. At this time it has not been determined what the charge will be and what the added features will be for that premium charge. And finally, Living DNA has free uploads of DNA test results and there is no charge.

These are just some of the many factors that genealogists and family historians need to consider when selecting a DNA test. Visit DNA Bargains to view the article Which DNA Test Kit Should I Buy on Black Friday? for more information.
