FREE Article – Finding Ancestors Amid the Rubble of Disaster and Misfortune
This week Free Download Friday focuses on disasters and genealogy. No, I’m not talking about how disorganized your genealogy files are or the state of your genealogical research. Instead, the focus is two-fold: what to do when a disaster such as a fire, tornado or hurricane has destroyed records important to your genealogy research AND how some disasters can actually cause important record sets to be created in the aftermath of the event.
This past Monday was the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which destroyed all vital records in Cook County, Illinois (includes Chicago) from 1837 when the City of Chicago was incorporated up through October 1871. And this week is National Fire Prevention Week in the United States. So a discussion of genealogy and disasters is very timely.
I recently “de-commissioned” my lecture on genealogy records, disasters, and substitute records. In doing so, I created an article using the syllabus materials so that others would still have access to the content. Included is an extensive list of resources covering types of disasters, medical terminology, historical weather, locating documentation and news accounts, and where to look for substitute records.
